1. Summary of work to be allocated into a specific WG

This Partner is using in vitro plant tissue culture, biochemical assays of oxidative stress, antioxidative response, chlorophyll fluorescence, ABA and cytokinins content, mainly in crop plants studies. Since the last two years, subject of partners group investigations is localization of genes loci (QTLs) involved in drought and cold resistance of wheat using of high-density genetic map of hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) from the cross Chinese Spring X SQ1. The work could be mostly integrated into WG4.5.

2. Links with other WG and/or Subgroups

The work is also linked with WG3.1 and WG3.2 in order to study interactions with other signaling/metabolic pathways involved in the production of osmoprotectants, like sugars, phenolics, proline, aspartate and glutamate-derived compounds.

3. Specific activities to be integrated into WG and/or Subgroups

WG3.1: Development of systems biology approaches for physiological response in various stress signaling pathways and the synthesis of osmo-protectants in plants using mapping of QTLs.

WG3.2: Study of cross-talk between drought or cold stress, and dark and sugar starvation with respect to glutamate derived amino acids by employing identification of reliable QTLs for physiological and biochemical traits responded to tolerance of drought and cold stress.

4. Qualification for the role and current grants

Izabela Marcinska is Associate Professor at the Department of Biotechnology (Institute of Plant Physiology Unit) of Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow. She has many years experiences in studying the physiological and biochemical processes in crops also the response to abiotic stress. Recently, she participated in two European grants: Environmental Stress in Sustainable Agricultural Production (QLK5-CT-2002-30424, 2004-2006) and Gametic cells and molecular breeding for crops improvement (COST Action 851, 2002-2005).

5. Technical expertise and facilities

This partner will provide the experiences on plant tissue culture, determination of physiological and biochemical traits like: growth and development, yield, kinetics induction of chlorophyll fluorescence, antioxidative enzyme activities, content of carbohydrates, phenols, phospholipids, polyamines, ABA and cytokinins and also experiences in mapping of QTLs, etc. The laboratory have the equipment (ELISA, gas and liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry) and facilities to carry out the determination of polyamines and other compounds involved in its metabolic pathway.
